Sonam Kapoor Ahuja on 'Disrespectful' Remake of Mr India: 'No one Bothered to Consult my Father'
After filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who helmed the 1987 release , expressed his hurt over the remake of his iconic Anil Kapoor and Sridevi starrer, Bollywood diva Sonam Kapoor Ahuja has expressed her shock and resentment. Coming across the news on social media, Sonam put out a detailed note that lashed out at the new makers.
Taking to her Instagram handle, Sonam shared, "A lot of people have been asking me about the MR. India remake. Honestly my father didn't even know the film was being remade, we found out about it through social media when @aliabbaszafar tweeted. It's quite disrespectful and underhanded if it is true, since no one bothered to consult my father or Shekhar uncle, two people who played a major role in making the film what it was and is. It's sad because that was a film made with heart and hard work and is very sentimental to my father, beyond commerce and announcements, it's a part of his legacy. I should hope that respect for someone's work and contribution is still as important to us as a big weekend at the box office. (sic)"
The news of re-imagining of the 1987 classic Mr India, that initially starred Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri in the lead, did not go down well with fans who instantly declared the upcoming trilogy by director Ali Abbas Zafar and Zee Studios a "big flop". Taking to the micro-blogging site, Twitterati called out the original makers Shekhar Kapur and Booney Kapoor to help avert the remake. Answering fans desperate calls, Shekhar responded that he had no idea of it in the first place.
The 1987 cult classic will reportedly be set in the contemporary superhero world. While rumours of Shah Rukh Khan or Ranveer Singh leading the film float across the grapevine, Ali told PTI, "It is a huge responsibility to carry forward an iconic character that has been loved by Indians for so many years. I have just commenced working on the script, no actor has been locked till now, once the first draft of the script is ready, we will begin the casting process. The film involves massive amounts of pre-production and will go on floor early next year."
The original film was helmed by Shekhar Kapur featuring Anil Kapoor in the titular role opposite Sridevi while Amrish Puri played the antagonist. Zee Studios CEO Shariq Patel spilled the beans on the upcoming film which will be written and directed by Ali. he told PTI, "We are excited to have Ali on board for Mr. India. This is not a 'part 2' or a remake of the older film as recently reported in some sections of the media, but a re-imagining of the iconic classic."
