KFC's 'Chicken & Donuts' sandwich a sweet, sticky mess, locals say
VICTORVILLE - A self-described "fried chicken connoisseur," Randy Boucher was one of many local foodies who ventured out in the Victor Valley on Monday to try Kentucky Fried Chicken's new "Chicken & Donuts" sandwich.
As advertised, the sandwich consists of an extra crispy chicken filet that's surrounded by two glazed doughnuts. It's part of the company's "Kentucy Fried Chicken & Donuts" promotion, which is now available nationwide.
Locally, residents like Boucher, 32, of Hesperia, offered verdicts on the gooey curiosity.
"I bought a sandwich for myself and one for my girlfriend, who only ate about half of it because she said it was too sticky and messy," Boucher told the Daily Press. "You'll definitely need a wet napkin or towel if you eat one."
Monica Campos, who works for a Victorville insurance company, said she bought sandwiches for each of her three coworkers, who promptly devoured them for lunch.
"We all love chicken and doughnuts, so we knew we'd love the new sandwich," Campos said. "They were pretty good, but they were extremely sticky."
The new sandwich comes packaged in a signature red-and-white box that dons the likeness of Colonel Harland Sanders, the KFC founder who opened his first store in 1952.
In a statement, Andrea Zahumensky, KFC's U.S. chief marketing officer, called the combination "the newest fried chicken trend" that the company is "bringing to all of America."
"But not just any donut would do," Zahumensky continued. "Only a donut that's glazed-to-order and served piping hot every single time can stand next to our hand-breaded fried chicken. It's a finger-lickin' good dish filled with glaze and glory."
Fans can experience the new sandwich or the "Kentucky Fried Chicken & Donuts Basket," which includes either chicken on the bone or extra crispy chicken tenders, paired with one doughnut. Guests can satisfy their sweet tooth by adding a doughnut for an additional cost.
To promote the new menu item, KFC launched a YouTube video featuring a singing Colonel Sanders belting out the "Flower Duet" from the opera "Lakm."
The "Chicken & Donuts" promotion comes after the KFC's nationwide debut of "Nashville Hot Chicken" in 2016 and "Chicken & Waffles" in 2018.
"Kentucky Fried Chicken & Donuts" menu options will be available through March 16, or while supplies last, according to the company.
